“Priceless” might be one way to describe this action-packed Santa Anita Derby shot, though the horse and jockey up front certainly wouldn’t think so. En route to claiming the race’s $1 million prize, California Chrome and Victor Espinoza galloped their way past the competition, becoming front-runners to win the Kentucky Derby. As the colt rounded the bend, photographer Jeanine Williams documented the moment using a Canon EOS 5D Mark III. “I was just glad to be able to catch the eventual winner on his way to destroy the field,” says Williams. “Anytime I can pair my two loves, photography and horse racing, I try my best to capture the excitement of the moment.” In the meantime, like the thoroughbred and Espinoza, we’ll set our sights on Louisville. It’s been 52 years since the Golden State prevailed at the Kentucky Derby. And in true racing fashion, we’ll bet on that changing soon.
