Garrett Leight, of the eponymous eyewear empire, reveals his local scene.
Garrett Leight is a homegrown visionary—a native Angeleno in a land of transplants and starry-eyed opportunists. As the son of Oliver Peoples founders Larry and Cindy Leight, Garrett has not fallen far from the family tree. Garrett Leight California Optical (GLCO) opened its first retail store in 2009, and the young designer has built a brand that embraces the active, social living of SoCal and beyond. Leight studied journalism before launching his successful eyewear company, and utilizes his company’s online portal to share a multimedia buffet of lifestyle stories. A newly-revamped company website with a modern custom interface—and recent collaborations with bespoke suit designer Waraire Boswell and Malibu-based surf brand Brothers Marshall—have GLCO riding some big new waves. Here’s where the eyewear expert can be seen about town.
1. Get Outside of Town
"Palm Springs, without a doubt. It’s significantly better than every other L.A. vacation spot."
2. Grab a Bite
"I love Gjelina (1429 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice). It’s just so delicious and consistent."
"I'm addicted to taco trucks, and [also] always spend too much money at Mohawk General Store (4011 Sunset Blvd., Silver Lake, 323.669.1601). They have the best menswear."
4. Get Glammed
"There's only one place for L.A. glam as far as I'm concerned: The Beverly Hills Hotel (9641 Sunset Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310.276.2251). It’s perfectly laid-back."
5. Dress the Part
"Barney's (9570 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310.276.4400) is always a great place for a walk through, as well as Just One Eye (7000 Romaine St., Hollywood, 888.563.6858) and the new Acne Studios store (855 Broadway, Downtown L.A., 213.243.0960). The last two are very inspiring."
