Out of the Blue

Tapping celebrated stylist to the stars and interior designer Estee Stanley to revamp The Beverly Hilton’s epic Aqua Star Pool is a classic L.A. case of one role leading to another.

Interior designer and celebrity stylist Estee Stanley

Originally hired to design new uniforms for the hotel’s waitstaff (drawing on 15 years of experience creating red-carpet looks for the likes of Lea Michele to do so), Stanley dove in, giving Aqua Star swimmers countless new reasons to take the plunge just as stylishly as when Hollywood’s Golden Age mermaid, Esther Williams, made her inaugural dip in 1955. Calling her design updates “stories,” Stanley’s narrative includes an abundance of vibe-altering lemon trees, outdoor fabrics by International Silks & Woolens, and pillows and blankets from HomeMint, the home accessories collection she co-curates with Justin Timberlake. Freshening up the iconic spot meant making it more “bright, clean and colorful, so it would be more than a place that hosts Oscars and Emmys, but also a daytime destination,” says Stanley, who drew from Old California, ’50s- and ’60s-era, Hockney-like photos and a recent stay at Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia, Italy (the site of Timberlake and Jessica Biel’s nuptials—and an Adriatic-tinted dipper’s dream), to complete the project. This swim spot was so pristine “it made me want to jump in every day,” she says. Speaking of everyday, those uniforms? Servers, now outfitted in navy, white and khaki Lacoste polos (“so Los Angeles”), plus shorts and sneakers, are as in vogue as the venue. 9876 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310.274.7777, beverlyhilton.‌com
