I scream, you scream... we all know the saying. For those SoCal summer days, here are five ways to cool down with the season’s sweetest treat.
Culver City’s sleek, chic purveyor of ice cream, cookies and token sandwiches boasts an adventurous array of flavors, like maple flapjack. The choices here are culinary building blocks meant to reflect the relationship between food and architecture, as evidenced in the new Coolhaus Ice Cream Book ($25, Houghton Mifflin). 8588 Washington Blvd., Culver City, 310.424.5559
2. Sweet Rose Creamery
The masterminds behind Huckleberry and Rustic Canyon conceded to sweet teeth everywhere when they opened Sweet Rose Creamery in 2010. The buzzy store inside the Brentwood Country Mart demanded sequel locations, and at last, Santa Monica and Mid City are coaxing visitors with fudge brownie sundaes. 826 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica; 7565 Beverly Blvd., L.A., 310.260.2663
3. N’ice Cream
This Abbot Kinney mainstay, with outposts in Santa Monica and on the Venice Boardwalk, uses organic ingredients to concoct flavors that pack a punch: Think birthday cake, stracciatella and salted caramel. And with a website that details the exact time that each batch was made, you can be sure that each scoop is as fresh as it is nice. 1410 Abbot Kinney Blvd., #102, Venice, 310.396.7161
4. Ice-Cream Lab
Leave it to 90210 to host an ice cream parlor that revolves around molecular gastronomy. Using liquid nitrogen to instantly create frozen delights, the year-old lab serves up traditional flavors, new twists and vegan varieties too. If only science class were this cool. 9461 Little Santa Monica Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310.795.6505
5. Van Leeuwen
Brooklyn’s own Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream is seeking refuge in sunnier climes with its latest four-wheeled venture. A new L.A. truck is roaming the city’s blacktop, dishing classic flavors made from antibiotic-free milk and cream. In true food-truck fashion, locations are announced via Twitter: @VLAIC. 718.701.1630
