Ombré cakes in jewel tones are making white wedding confections look passé.

The timeless look of a lace wedding gown inspired the design for Amy Berman’s cascading confection. Its three tiers are covered in intricately cut fondant, covered in varying shades of mint. Next, Berman hand-piped an Irish lace pattern that rises above the colored layers. “Ombré is a dramatic look and is one of our favorite ways to work with color,” says Berman, executive pastry chef and owner, along with her husband, of Vanilla Bake Shop in Santa Monica. The charming vintage lace resembles a flurry of winter snowflakes falling on the cake. “Our design aesthetic is very clean,” she adds. The finished creation is simply romantic.
