Emily & Hank

High-school sweethearts Emily Shuford and Charles “Hank” Keller plan an elegant celebration that ends with fireworks.
Emily Anne Shuford and Charles “Hank” Keller met when Emily was a freshman at Highland Park High School and Hank was a sophomore, and they’ve been together ever since. Oh, there were the years when she studied at Ole Miss and he attended Louisiana State University, but they still visited one another, valuing their time together even more. Reunited in Dallas in 2010, “It was, ‘This is what I want forever,’” Emily recalls. “We just get along so well.”
Hank surprised her with his proposal by fibbing that he was going to be away for Thanksgiving Day in 2012, their 10-year dating anniversary. Instead, he turned up early at her parents’ home that morning, gave her a hug and proposed bedside on bended knee. “My family was behind the door and came in with cameras, and friends came to brunch at 10am and his entire family—grandparents and cousins, too—came later,” Emily recalls. “It was a whole day of surprises.”
They married the following September at Brook Hollow Golf Club, where her parents are longtime members. “I’ve always loved the country club,” Emily says. “It’s a beautiful place.”
Emily chose a citrus theme, which translated to lemon trees at the club’s front entrance and bright flowers cascading from latticework, plus fresh lemons, limes and oranges embedded in botanical arrangements.
Alison Baker and Anna Staple of DFW Events coordinated all vendors and events so that planning was “a blast and completely stress-free,” Emily notes.
A banquet of buffet tapas included one station with Mexican favorites like ceviche shooters and quesadillas, another with American classics like beef sliders, and another with sushi and shrimp tempura.
They honeymooned in Tuscany and Saint-Tropez. “When [Hank] was 18 or 19, he went to Saint-Tropez with a couple guy friends and said, ‘One day we’ll get married, and I’ll take you there on our honeymoon,’” Emily recalls. And, he did.
