Hill Country Cool

Destination Texas!

The Ranger Lounge’s interior.

Exterior at The Prairie, also home to one of four Shabby Chic stores. The other locations are L.A., New York and London.

A little bit country and a little bit rock ’n’ roll, the newly unveiled events space at The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell is a barn to beat all. Made for lively events, not livestock, the rustic venue showcases vintage wallpaper and “chandeliers and sconces to give it a little extra touch,” says Events Coordinator Kim Thweatt. Opened earlier this year by designer Rachel Ashwell—the London-born, L.A.-based founder of the Shabby Chic brand, the bed and breakfast rests on 46 acres in Round Top, Texas, the small-town antiquer’s paradise about an hour west on 290.

It accommodates weddings for up to 250 guests (packages from $6,200 for the entire property), and sleeps 18 to 24 in three late 19th century bungalows and a two-story “lodge” with charming chipped-paint accoutrements, cozy floral linens and wraparound porches (rooms from $200). It also makes a smart site for a girls’ getaway. “We offer a beautiful, peaceful setting that includes the use of fields,” Thweatt says. “It’s an easy and really pretty drive from Houston.”
