A serene outdoor venue provides a stunning backdrop for this couple’s fabulous, highly personalized fete.
Rosanna Kennedy and Charles Cermak have been dating on and off for over 15 years, so when they finally got engaged (with Charles romantically writing “Marry Me” in the fresh snow outside of their home), the couple’s extensive network of friends and family couldn’t be happier. “We’ve been together for so long that we were that couple everyone was rooting for,” says the bride.
While many couples incorporate a few DIY touches, Rosanna and Charles enjoyed being very hands-on, from creating the table runners (sewed by the groom) to centerpieces to boutonnieres. “It makes it easy if you’re a team,” says Rosanna of the planning process. The creative duo’s talented network of friends also played a role in the special day, with several friends stepping in as vendors, including the florist, the caterer and the bride’s makeup artist. The result? An incredibly personal event.
The nuptials took place on a perfect summer evening at the Steirer Club von Chicago, with their good friend officiating a ceremony the couple wrote themselves. A pastel color palette (the bride wore pink!) with touches of green and gray accentuated the shabby chic garden vibe.
With both the bride and groom working in the restaurant industry, food took center stage. The 325 guests dined on smoked meats and comfort food sides, followed by a dark chocolate cake from the same baking company where the bride (a trained pastry chef) was once an intern. Afterward, the officiant-turned-DJ spun strictly upbeat tunes, and “we destroyed the dance floor,” laughs Rosanna, until capping off the evening with a s’mores bar and pizza buffet.
“It was the best day of our lives,” says the bride, when asked to sum up the experience. “We learned that we have so many amazing people in our lives, and that if we could make this happen, we can do anything.”
