“What I wanted to do differently is really capture the full expanse of the city below with a landscape view, to give a real sense of how high up the people on the Ledge are,” says photographer Carl Larson. After waiting in line to get his turn to step out onto one of the glass-enclosed boxes, Larson used a handheld camera and placed it on the ground right up against the glass. Luckily, he had perfect timing. “I wanted to take the shot at the most dramatic time possible, the ‘blue hour’ right after sunset when the light from the setting sun is balanced with the lights from the city.”
