Britt Chic

Designer Britt Eldridge’s line, Britt Ryan, has been making a splash with its preppy-chic dresses and apparel since it’s launch in 2010. The designer recently opened a boutique in Georgetown, only the second in the country, and has Washington’s fashionable women clamoring for her colorful summer frocks.

We caught up with the new DC resident to chat about her impressions of the nation’s capital, must-haves for the summer season and why a chance meeting on a cruise led her to the District. 1625 Wisconsin Ave. NW, 202.808.2408, brittryan.‌com

You launched your line in Boston on swanky Newbury Street. Now, you’ve chosen Georgetown as the spot for your second store. On top of that, you’ve also moved the headquarters here. Why the switch? A man. We actually met on a cruise. We’ve been together for two and a half years. I was in Boston, and he’s been in DC this whole time. It was really one of those things where one of us made a choice. After two and a half years, I budged—and I’m really excited about being in this area.

Moving for love! What do you think of DC so far? I feel like I’ve had a very warm reception. I’ve found that it’s easier to get to know people. You walk by somebody on the street, and you say hello. I’m really enjoying that! And I’m kind of digging the summer over the snow.

Let’s talk fashion. What do you think of how DC dresses? What I’m seeing in Georgetown, both women and men seem to really care about how they’re presenting themselves to the outside world. I see a lot of color on both genders, which I love. I think it’s easier to do that when your weather is better—compared to Boston. My impression is there’s a sophisticated style here. I’ve been impressed by it.

Your line translates well to the Georgetown aesthetic. What are some must-haves for summer? The line is very feminine, sometimes girly and classic. All of our prints are signature. We design them all in-house. We use very high-end European fabrics and silks. We have a really cute signature sailboat print this season. That’s a real must-have. It’s darling.

And what are your must-sees in DC as a new resident? I love the National Portrait Gallery, and I already saw the Hope Diamond at the Museum of Natural History. I also absolutely love the architecture here. I could spend all day driving around looking at the different embassies. And Russia House restaurant—oh my!  It’s to-die-for gorgeous!
