As President Obama gave a commencement speech at the United States Naval Commissioning Ceremony, photographer Kevin Carroll noticed that some of the graduates were actually shivering in their seats.

The skies were low and dreary, and it was quite chilly for late spring. “With the cold air, I knew the midshipmen would be more excited than normal to finally stand and throw” their hats in the air, says Carroll. This prompted him to focus his Canon 7D at the exuberant cap toss and think black-and-white, giving the scene depth and a rich contrast between the white uniforms and brooding clouds. He was thrilled with the image, as it captured, for the briefest moment, the bright days ahead for these grads.
