Asian Persuasion

Houston is embracing another foodie fad as new restaurants make way for Asian fusion.

Trenza chef-owner Susie Jimenez’s path to foodie fame started in San Francisco, took her through Aspen and has now brought her to Houston.

West Ave has seen the recent bow of Nara, a Korean-Japanese combo from chef Donald Chang, and newly minted Houstonian Susie Jimenez’s Trenza, which pairs Latin dishes she grew up making with Indian cuisine she’s learned to love—think sizzling saffron shrimp and chicken-tikka-masala empanadas. “The spices connect everything in different ways,” says the Aspen transplant. Jimenez, who appeared as a contestant on season seven of Food Network Star after training and working in San Francisco and Colorado—everything from shucking oysters to working the line—made the move to H-Town in the summer with her eyes on setting down resto roots.
