Get Inked

What do you get when science and art collide?

Genetik Ink can map out your pet’s DNA too!

Well, if you ask 26-year-old Kishan Bhoopalam, the answer is some pretty stellar stuff. That’s the gist of his Atlanta-based startup, Genetik Ink, which officially launches this month at genetikink.com. Via his company’s striking and personalized modern-art prints, Bhoopalam makes genetic data look fab, not drab!

The idea first came to him when he was studying the uberserious field of neuroscience—white coat and all—at Indiana University Bloomington. “I was doing tasks like genetic sequencing repetitively,” he says of the lab work. “A lot of scientists just see data,” he says, referring to the complex and often colorfully rendered DNA sequences, “but if you take a step back, you realize it’s really fascinating.”

Genetik Ink’s biz brilliance is in its marriage of brains and beauty. “I wanted to get people talking about genetics in a setting other than academia,” he says, officially upping its cool quotient. Lucky for us, that setting can be our suddenly sexified abode.

So how exactly does Genetik Ink turn a piece of your identity into posh home decor? First, select from 20 color schemes, three sizes and two print materials (fine art canvas or aluminum). Next, Genetik Ink will mail you a DNA collection kit. Send in a cheek swab, and boom! Genetik Ink’s FDA-approved lab will process your DNA in a truly scientific way. Within two weeks, you’ll have some totally custom art.

“There’s no reason why we can’t design amazing art and, eventually, interesting products for the realm of science too.” Art imitating science, and science imitating art… sounds like a beautiful world we’d like to see a little more of. $400-$800, @genetikink
