20 Questions With Alan Cumming

He seduced us in Cabaret, infuriates and amuses us in The Good Wife and now, beginning Apr. 7, Tony winner Alan Cumming will captivate us as he reprises his starring role in Broadway’s one-man production of Macbeth.

Cumming’s one-man performance of Macbeth hits the Ethel Barrymore Theater this month after runs at the National Theater of Scotland and last year’s Lincoln Center Festival.

Who would play you in your biopic?
Pee-wee Herman. We’re always being mistaken for each other.

What’s your favorite role to date?
I am a serial monogamist when it comes to roles. I love them then leave them, so right now it’s Macbeth!

First celebrity crush?
Farrah Fawcett.

When was the last time you took the subway?
I took it from my gym to my doctor’s office just the other day. I am obsessed with the N and R trains.

Phone calls or texts?
I’m actually obsessed with HeyTell—it’s a walkie-talkie app, so you don’t have to type but you don’t really have to chat, either.

Thing you’re most proud of?
That I’ve inspired people by being myself.

Five iconic figures you’d have at your dream dinner party?
Robert Burns, Mae West, Nelson Mandela, Salvador Dalí and Rasputin.

What signifies NYC to you?
Steam coming out of manholes. I think it’s such a beautiful, idiosyncratic New York thing.

What song could sum up your life?
“I Am What I Am” [from La Cage aux Folles], because I really do seize the day.

When are you at your happiest?
At my house in the Catskills with my man, dogs and friends.

If you could fix one thing about America, what would it be?
I’d make education free. It would revolutionize everything.

What always surprises you about New Yorkers?
That nobody can ever remember an exact address.

Favorite Broadway show?
Patti LuPone’s Gypsy. It made me gasp.

Where do you go when you want to be alone?
Swimming.

How often do you lie?
I pretend to remember people all the time. But that’s just lying to be nice.

What do you miss most about Scotland?
The sense of humour.

What’s your definition of sexy?
Being comfortable with yourself. And, knowing what you want.

What does no one know about Alan Cumming?
I’m a wiz with a chain saw.

Tumescent. I like the sound of it, but unlike being it.

Taylor Swift.
