The lucky folks who were invited to the Pérez Art Museum Miami’s premiere gala can attest that the years of construction and $131 million spent to make the venue a reality were well worth it. To celebrate its debut, PAMM invited some 750 locals and out-of-towners to what was one of the most anticipated social affairs of 2013.
Among the VIPs that made up the guest list were model Elle Macpherson and developer Jeffrey Soffer, photographer Bruce Weber, designer Naeem Khan and domesticity doyenne Martha Stewart.
As guests perused the museum’s multiple galleries and its nine opening exhibitions with Champagne in hand, much of the talk revolved around the Ai Weiwei show, a compendium of 20 years of work that didn’t fail to impress. Before the dinner, catered specially by Stephen Starr (of Makoto and Morimoto fame), museum chairman Aaron Podhurst welcomed the crowd and artist Michele Oka Doner presented namesake Jorge Pérez with a sculpture for his efforts in bringing the project to fruition. The evening was capped off with a special performance by Marc Anthony, during which many of the guests showed off their salsa moves. –Photos by Anthony A. Hynes
