His goal was to capture the streaking Pan-STARRS comet during what’s known in the photographer’s trade as the “blue hour,” a fleeting window of time just after sunset that produces vivid blues and oranges. “The comet was a bit too difficult to see with the naked eye, but a longer exposure with the camera was enough to gather the light to make it visible in the photo.”
