Jaguar pushes luxury to new heights with its extravagant new 2013 XJL Ultimate.

Not unlike a Rolex watch or a Louis Vuitton bag, a Jaguar makes a statement. When you pull up to a charity gala or the clubhouse in one, everyone takes note, drawn first by the Jag’s supermodel looks and then by curiosity as to whom it belongs. Jaguars, after all, are a rare breed: In 2011 they sold just 12,276 vehicles, compared to, for example, BMW’s 247,907. But if owning a Jaguar itself isn’t rarefied enough for you, now the iconic brand raises the stakes with its most refined model yet: the XJL Ultimate, a new-for-2013 limited-edition ultraluxurious four-door.

Inside, the XJL takes all the right cues from a private jet. Two power-adjustable, heated, cooled and massaging rear seats are separated by a stunning leather-stitched center console that houses everything from audio controls to a pair of bespoke Champagne flutes. Press a button and a solid aluminum table rises electronically from the rear console, transforming the XJL into a productive mobile office suite. Built into the seatbacks are iPads, along with two screens for watching live television or DVDs. A 20-speaker state-of-the-art Meridian audio system, meanwhile, makes you feel as if you’re seated inside a recording studio. And how about some ambience with that music? Blue phosphor lighting sets the mood at night, while sparkling chrome brightwork shines during the day. A panoramic roof affords a view of the sky (or stars) and adds to the spacious feeling inside.

Despite its size, the XJL is nimble and highly maneuverable, thanks in part to its lightweight all-aluminum body. New for 2013 is a highly efficient 8-speed automatic transmission that shifts so smoothly you’ll never spill your coffee again. And Jag mates it to a supercharged V8 engine that surges from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds.

In the looks department, whether pulling into the golf course or the valet, the XJL’s silhouette stands out, even in the luxury segment. Distinguishing the Ultimate from other XJLs are two-tone 20-inch rims, polished stainless steel oval tailpipes and “Ultimate” badges both in back and on the side.
With just 30 XJL Ultimates bound for the United States, catching one of these rare cats won’t be easy. But it can’t hurt to head to your local Jaguar dealer to inquire. With just a little bit of luck, you may bag one of your own. Jaguars are sold at Imperial Motors Jaguar in Lake Bluff and Wilmette,
