When Matt Gormly proposed on the rooftop of their New York City apartment building, with 360-degree sunset views of the skyline adding even more sparkle to her new bling, there was no doubt in Lindsay Merrill’s mind that the couple would wed in a location in stark contrast to that evening.

Georgia native Lindsay’s family bought Foxhall Resort & Sporting Club, about 35 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta in Douglasville, as a family farm back in 2007. Her father and brother eventually developed the property, which now operates as a resort and sporting club that also serves as a wedding venue. “It is such a special place to us, where we will continue to make memories for the rest of our lives,” says Lindsay.

The couple—who met through mutual friends during a fall-break trip to Las Vegas—set about planning a timeless affair at Foxhall. Lindsay, who describes her style as classic, elegant and clean, chose a color palette full of neutrals and blues, complemented by lots of white orchids. Planning a wedding in Georgia while living in New York and then Dallas called for an expert on the ground, so they enlisted Atlanta-based Lindsay Sims of TOAST Events as full-time wedding coordinator.

Together they planned details to create a Ralph-Lauren-hunting-lodge-meets-The-St.-Regis-themed affair that honored the bride’s Southern roots as well as the groom’s New England heritage.

One of the bride’s favorite details was her dress. After trying on about 70 gowns, she opted for a strapless Romona Keveza with a long-sleeved lace bolero; then put Rodica Lazarian of Buckhead’s RL Couture Bridal Design to work to completely customize it.

In true Southern style, the wedding party was quite large. Foxhall has a variety of event spaces, which they took full advantage of, holding the rehearsal dinner at the stables, ceremony on the polo field, cocktail hour at Legacy Lookout, and dinner and dancing at the clubhouse. Sweet Southern touches included a bourbon sampling bar, a praline station complete with monogrammed bags, and classic Chick-fil-A chicken sandwiches as a surprise late-night snack.

“Whatever we didn’t have finished by the Wednesday before was either designated to someone else or didn’t get done!” The Gormlys now reside in Dallas, frequenting Atlanta to visit Lindsay’s family.
