When a first date spans several hours and flies by in flash, it’s often a sign that a relationship has serious potential. For Chita Johnson and Lane Craft, their first date set the stage for a sweet and romantic courtship that led right down the aisle and into happily ever after.
As a meteorologist for KHOU in Houston, Chita Johnson is used to analyzing information and predicting weather patterns, so she was puzzled when Lane Craft didn’t propose on a Fourth of July trip to Turks and Caicos after more than a year of dating.
“I truly thought the proposal was going to happen there. I was so excited,” Chita says. “We had a lot of fun activities every day and so many wonderful dinners. At the end of the trip, I was pretty disappointed!”
Chita turned to her mother, who shares the same name, for a little reassurance, and she reminded her daughter of the couple’s shared love and the value of patience.
Fortunately, Chita didn’t have to wait very long. Just a day after returning from their trip, Lane did indeed propose in the sweetest and simplest of ways. It was a private moment in his living room and one Chita will always treasure.
Wedding preparations amped up quickly. Chita called on the talents of wedding planner Stephanie Milam, of From This Moment On, to create an elegant, meaningful and fun wedding and reception.
Together with Chita’s mother, the trio perfected every detail of the day, from the formal engraved invitations and wedding menu to the Rolls-Royce ride down the firework fountain-lined driveway of River Oaks Country Club. Stephanie credits the meaningful elements woven throughout the wedding and reception for the true bridal bliss.
“The details that made Chita and Lane’s wedding so special were the personal touches they added. Without these, the event would have just been another beautiful wedding,” Stephanie says.
These details included the show-stopping father/daughter dance that quickly hit social media and drew cheers from wedding guests, as well as those on Facebook who were able to watch the revelry from their phones. The dance, to a compilation of songs including “My Girl” and “Soul Man,” featured the Worm and Johnson’s father, Paul, doing the splits.
Rappers Paul Wall, Slim Thug and Bun B revved up the wedding reception to serious party levels with a performance of Beyoncé’s “Check On It.”
Those moments added up to joyful celebration that both Chita and Lane envisioned, and have served as the foundation for their marriage. She encourages brides to remember the marriage is the very best gift to come from the wedding.
“Remember why you’re getting married and the outcome will last a lifetime.”
