When a mutual friend introduced Drew Kovacs and Justin Joy at a bar in New York City, neither knew that a lifetime of love and happiness was in store. After seven years of bliss, the couple decided to celebrate their relationship with a summer trip to Fire Island. During a romantic walk with their dog on the beach, Justin got down on one knee and asked Drew to marry him.

Drew and Justin got ready on the big day with family and friends at the 1 Hotel South Beach before sharing their I do’s at The Bath Club. Dressed in elegant Tom Ford suits, both grooms walked down the aisle to a cover of the Beatles classic “Here Comes the Sun” by Nashville-based country singer Bobby Cool. Betsy Leonidas, the same friend that had introduced them, officiated the ceremony.

At the request of the couple, wedding planner Mayrelis Febles of Elite Planning Firm modeled the look of their ceremony and reception after Drew and Justin’s own Miami apartment. Fusing modern and natural styles, she balanced a black, white, gold and gray color scheme with rustic touches like centerpieces with large manzanita branches, wild succulents and brightly colored orchids.

Incorporating their fun-loving personalities into the reception, the couple named each of the guest tables after a famous diva, like Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Beyoncé and Madonna. And guests were provided large cutouts of each of the leading ladies to liven up the dance floor. The couple even arranged for a confetti cannon to go off when The Dane Wright Band, a popular band from New York, played a song by Mariah Carey—their all-time favorite pop star. “It was the perfect surprise for our guests,” Justin says. “And the gold confetti cannon was amazing. Our guests were finding glitter in their suitcases for weeks.”

The entire event was nothing short of a ballroom blowout. Guests raved about the ice cream sundae bar. “We were going to have a lip-synch karaoke battle toward the end of the night, but everyone was having so much fun dancing,” Justin recalls. So the band continued to play, and the crowd loved every moment.
“The best parts were the toasts from my sisters and Drew’s brother, and of course the readings from our family and friends,” Justin remembers. “We expected them to be sweet, but the words they said were unbelievably heartfelt. It was beyond touching.” Justin and Drew celebrated their union with a relaxing honeymoon at the Rosewood Mayakobá in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
