While at first blush, you might guess the Detroit-based couple’s love blossomed at the hospital, but John, a physician, and Michel, a nurse, first fell in love online and didn’t actually meet face to face until seven months later. As their relationship progressed, John planned a getaway to Fort Lauderdale, where he popped the question at their favorite restaurant, but with three conditions: “I asked that Michel never steal, lie or cheat,” John says. “But if he must steal, then steal away my sorrows. And if he must lie, lie with me all the nights of my life. And if he must cheat, then please cheat death because I couldn’t live without him.”

The pair settled on Miami Beach for their destination wedding. “We wanted the focus of our celebration to be on our guests and the making of wonderful memories,” John adds. “National Hotel offers a great space and backdrop, along with wonderful food.” Wedding planner Catarina Suplicy helped the couple execute a “stylish but not stuffy” theme, taking cues from the property’s architecture and art deco style, and sticking to a palette of black and white with touches of silver and gray.

For dinner, guests dined on filet mignon, Chilean sea bass and vegetarian risotto—a highlight of the night, says John. Another big hit was the four-tier, four-flavor cake created by Ana Paz Cakes. “We went down the day after the wedding to pick up the top layer of the cake. The staff laughed and informed us that our guests had eaten our entire wedding cake!” shares John. The highs kept going as DJ Wasabi got everyone on their feet before the meal was served, and continued late into the evening. For their honeymoon, John and Michel then jetted off to Peru, where they explored Machu Picchu.

As luck would have it, Jorie, a registered nurse, met Craig, a pilot, at an Irish pub on St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago—alongside the green river, naturally. The couple hit it off quickly, and a year later, they embarked on a vacation to the British Virgin Islands. While visiting The Baths in Virgin Gorda, “Craig got down on one knee in the crystal-clear blue water to propose while we were both surrounded by massive boulders, hidden caves and beautiful lagoons,” Jorie says.

Ten months after the romantic proposal, the couple decided on a traditional Jewish ceremony at The Raleigh in Miami Beach. “We visited a few other hotels in the Miami Beach area, however in our hearts, we both knew The Raleigh was the absolute perfect venue,” shares Jorie. Inspired by the hotel’s iconic art deco style, Anna Kipnis with Ultimate Events incorporated a sleek palette of black, white and gold. The Restaurant at The Raleigh kicked off a sophisticated dinner with appetizers including shishito peppers with Sichuan sauce, local fish tiradito and wagyu-and-foie sliders, and guests indulged in a three-tier cake with a vanilla and dulce de leche layer between two chocolate and peanut butter layers by Earth and Sugar.

The party got off to an energetic start with DJ/live band hybrid Fusion by Rock With U Entertainment—but the celebration didn’t stop there. DJ Ross Bielejeski continued to rock out until the early morning hours while guests enjoyed a candy buffet, truffle fries and cocktails at the penthouse rooftop afterparty. For their honeymoon, Jorie and Craig made their way around the world, stopping in Sydney, Bali and, finally, Hong Kong, where they toasted to newlywed life at Ozone, the highest bar in the world, at The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong.

While searching for a book at Barnes & Noble in New Jersey, Lauren, then a grad student, met Christian, an employee. Despite him helping her for an hour, the two didn’t exchange names. It wasn’t until a chance encounter months later at Rita’s Italian Ice when they bonded over frozen custard that Lauren knew she had met someone special. Lauren, who has cystic fibrosis, felt instantly at ease with Christian. “I never felt so comfortable telling someone about my illness,” she says. “He responded sensitively and empathically.” A four-hour conversation led to a three-year relationship and now the couple resides in Jupiter. On Halloween, Christian popped the question in their home. “He told me he wanted to spend every minute together, no matter how many minutes we might have left,” Lauren adds.

A little more than a year later, the couple said “I do” at The Addison in Boca Raton. Lauren, along with her mother and sister, planned the big day with a Kate Spade-inspired theme of black and white with gold accents. While the ceremony was originally going to be in the venue’s courtyard, a downpour changed their plans and the group ended up in the Mizner Ballroom. “The aesthetics of the ceremony were different than we had planned, but the room itself was beautiful, with an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out directly over the courtyard,” says Lauren.

Guests danced to sounds from Custom DJ Services on a black-and-white tiled dance floor that tied it all together. “I was very anxious leading up to the wedding about one thing only: getting to enjoy the best day of my life fully without worrying about whether or not cystic fibrosis would intervene,” says Lauren, reflecting on the day. “I was able to dance, talk, laugh—everything I wanted to do. It was a perfect day and night.” The bride and groom went to Walt Disney World for their honeymoon and thoroughly enjoyed Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom.
