When you’ve been together for eight years, people expect you to be in step with one another, but few guests were ready for Allison Lizzadro and Paul Megalis’ in-sync fancy footwork—a combination of a rumba and fox trot, to be exact—for their first dance as Mr. and Mrs.

“We took lessons at Arthur Murray and put together a little choreography to ‘A Thousand Years’ by Christina Perri,” says Lizzadro. The 400 guests at their reception went wild, but that wasn’t the only surprise the couple planned with help from Ali Phillips of Engaging Events by Ali. “I loved that Allison and Paul embraced a wedding that reflected their families, but also their own design style and sense of who they are as a couple,” says Phillips.

The pair both grew up in the Chicago suburbs: Megalis in Woodvale and Lizzadro in Hinsdale. They met while in college at DePaul University—on Black Friday, no less—and now live in River North.

The wedding took place at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago, the same church where Megalis’ grandparents were married (his 89-year-old grandmother was an honored guest at the service). The bride walked down the aisle in a Vera Wang gown with a fitted bodice and layered silk organza skirt and train. After the service, the couple and their guests headed to another location with special family ties, Chateau Ritz in Niles, which is owned and run by Megalis’ family.

Since many of their guests had been to events at Chateau Ritz before, the wedding team incorporated beloved traditions—like serving cream of asparagus soup, Megalis’ favorite—but with a few twists to make the reception unique to the couple. That included adding and decorating a tent with white chandeliers for the cocktail reception, and then, while the guests were in the ballroom for dinner, transforming the space for the after-party rave with flickering candles and a dance floor. Lizzadro requested a sweets table, and Sugar Chic Designs made all of her favorites, coordinating the macarons, coconut-cake push pops and more with the wedding’s ivory-and-gold color palette. For Megalis, they brought in Portillo’s Chicago-style hot dogs and fries so dancing guests could have a late-night snack.

After all the celebrating with family and friends, Megalis and Lizzadro took a well-deserved honeymoon to St. Lucia. “For so many reasons, it was just so special to have our reception at Paul’s family’s place,” says Lizzadro, reflecting on the big day. “They really went all out for us.”
