Celebrate the end of summer with the kids and head to one of these local entertainment and cultural centers for some quality family time.
Call it divine intervention: The cult classic Sister Act is onstage through Aug. 18. The riotous story—which originally starred a young and hilarious Whoopi Goldberg—follows a singing diva who goes into witness protection in a Catholic convent, and it comes to life with the original Academy Award-winning music and a new all-star Broadway cast. O.C.’s Festival Ballet Theatre shows off the world’s next generation of dance stars during its summer recital performance, Gala of the Stars. On Aug. 16, the young ballerinas and ballerinos step into the spotlight to wow audiences with their newest moves, choreography and exceptional talent. Come see the largest cast of South Coast Repertory’s Summer Players sing popular tunes like “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow” as they perform the beloved stage musical Annie on Aug. 17-18. The 34 young actors were chosen from SCR’s Kids and Teen Acting Program, including Kelsey Bray, who plays in the starring role of Annie, who escapes from an orphanage to search for her parents in 1930s New Yrok City. 4. DaVinci’s Code
Spend a day learning about the many inventions that Leonardo DaVinci dreamed up during the DaVince Workshop at Discovery Science Center on Aug. 17-18. Pore through many of his design drawings, including a sketch for a self-propelled cart that was done centuries before the first auto was ever introduced, and then try your hand at designing and building your own mode of transportation—a glider. 2500 N. Main St., Santa Ana, 714.542.2823, discoverycube.org
5. Beat It!
Kids like to make noise, and drums are the perfect noisemakers. On Aug. 18, you and the kids can make both at Bowers Kidseum. You and your tykes will have a chance to build your own drums, then join a drum circle for some musical camaraderie. 1802 N. Main St., Santa Ana, 714.480.1520, bowers.org
