The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and was almost immediately overshadowed by the Golden Gate Bridge, which opened less than a year later. A dull workhorse next to a glamorous star, it seemed the Bay Bridge would never outshine its sister to the north. That all changed on the evening of March 5, 2013, when the Bay Bridge—thanks to 25,000 LED lights—did just that: shined. As amazing as the lights are, the story of how they got there is perhaps even more so, a story given life by Jeremy Ambers’ captivating new feature-length documentary, Impossible Light.
