Local lyricist and producer K.Flay, who just released her second LP, Eyes Shut, and has been tearing up the road on tour, is finally back in town for her first performance at Treasure Island Music Festival. She took a moment out of her hectic schedule to entertain us with her answers to our mildly relevant questions.
Where’d you get your start?
"In college at Stanford. I was studying music and had a boyfriend at the time who was from here and super into Bay Area rap, so I kind of fell into it. Started as house parties on campus, and then started doing shows in the city and it just kind of came together after that."
Which do you prefer: collaborating or going solo?
"Different types of projects, solo stuff is better to do, just finishing up my album and most the tracks on that are coproduction in some way which is cool because it pushes me to try new stuff. For other things, it can be really liberating having no one there, but it probably results in more of me just sobbing in my bed [kidding]."
Would you rather DJ or MC?
"I think the lyrical stuff comes more natural to me, production came out of necessity bcause I had nothing to rap on, but it doesn’t as quickly or as naturally but in way that’s fun because it’s more of challenge, funny thing is the best stuff is often very simple but it’s hard to find out what."
Your favorite Bay Area rapper?
"I was a crazy Zion I fan when I first started which is cool because I ended up doing a track with them. My default is e-40 because there’s no one else in the world who raps like him. I’ve always loved e-40."
Act you’re most looking forward to at TIMF?
"Grimes because I’ve had some friends who saw her when she first started, she’s got an interesting setup and I’m always interested in watching other female solo artists perform."
Top three songs on your playlist?
“Lost Kitten” by Metric
“The Keepers” by Santigold (The Knocks Remix)
“Just What I Am” by Kid Cudi
Your Spirit Animal?
"A guinea pig… I had an amazing guinea pig named Mickey, but not after Mickey Mouse, when I was younger and we just had a crazy connection. So I figured that must be it."
