Bay Area Michelin Stars Announced

See which new restaurants have made the cut—and which haven't.

If you've noticed a certain air of barely-concealed anxiety among your restaurant-owner friends, it's not because they've been worried about the exact right moment of mushy to serve those Hachiya persimmons. It's because the entire Bay Area gastro-sphere has been awaiting the release of the 2014 Michelin Guide ratings. And today, proper mushiness having been achieved, they are here. Who's up? Who's down? And who has still been inexplicably left off of the list?

Let's take a look.

Promotions: Quince, owned by Michael and Lindsay Tusk (and located around the corner from our office in Jackson Square), has gone from one stars to two. Rookie State Bird Provisions, whose Nicole Krasinski and Stuart Brioza we named Best Chefs of 2013, has entered the list at one star.

Demotions: Masa's lost its star the honest way—it closed. La Costanera slid from one star to the JV list, the Bib Gourmand. Alexander’s Steakhouse, Frances, and Redd all lost their respective one star ratings too.

Absences: Cases could be made for several Bay Area restaurants to have been included that were not on the list. The Chronicle's Paolo Lucchessi points to Fifth Floor, AQ, Commonwealth, Parallel 37, and Rich Table. The Daily Meal thinks that Mission Chinese Food might deserve a star. Worth an extra mention is Berkeley's Chez Panisse, which lost its star back in 2011, and has not regained it since.
