Round Nine: The Modernist mecca battles the Latin American rooftop two storefronts down for Mission bragging rights.
Who has the best brunch in the city? Our first ever Brunch Bracket pits sixteen of the city's most popular brunch spots in a single elimination, fight-to-the-death tournament. Our food editor Rebecca Flint Marx seeded the contenders, but it's your votes that decide who wins. Every weekday, you'll have a chance to vote on the day's matchup until we decide our ultimate winner. Yesterday, number six seed Spruce pulled an upset against number three seed Zazie.
Winner: El Techo de Lolinda 53%. Runner-Up: Foreign Cinema 47%.
(1) Foreign Cinema
Address: 2534 Mission St. (near 21st St.)
Signature Dish: Balsamic Fried Eggs
Vibe: A bohemian utopia with a Modernist art gallery, independent film theater, and an appetizer menu dubbed an "urban picnic"
Representative Patron: The hippest of the hipsters who wants to know how to pronounce every adjective on the menu
Weakness: Sometimes you aren't in the mood for an "urban picnic" but just want a beer
(5) El Techo de Lolinda
Address: 2518 Mission Street (near 21st St.)
Signature Dish: Chicharrones de carne (sold by the pound)
Vibe: The casual, street-food feeling with a classy, rooftop view
Representative Patron: The late-twenties, tech crowd who don't care if they can pronounce what they order and like their meat served on a skewer
Weakness: The well organized eater comes for drinks after eating at Foreign Cinema
Do you prefer to spend your Sundays watching French film indoors or getting wasted on a rooftop patio? Do you prefer your poached eggs with chorizo or confit? Will Latin American steet food or global haute cuisine win the battle for the Mission's gastronomic soul? Vote here to let us know your pick. The poll will be open for 24 hours, so jump onto Twitter and Facebook to rally your friends!
