For Cheap Rents, Get As Far Away from SF As Possible

For every mile farther you go, rents drop $17.

Stay away from us—we're hideous.

San Francisco is a city with gravity. It pulls things in—whether artists or geeks or even high rents. That's the obvious conclusion to the information in this story in the Business Times about the cities in the Bay Area with the cheapest and most expensive rents. Hidden in the plain sight in the story is a solution to rent affordability—get the hell away from San Francisco.

SF leads the region, of course, but many of the highest rents in other cities around the Bay are in some of the places closest to us. By contrast, if you want to find cheaper rents, your best bet is to get as far away as possible. The ten cities with the cheapest rents in the region are an average of 36 miles from SF. The ten most expensive average 30. (That may not sound like much, but it's 17% closer). In fact, according to a simple linear regression we ran, for every mile that you move away from San Francisco, you save $17 a month on rent.

It's not just distance—it's direction. If you're going to flee, head east, not south. Of the least expensive cities, nine out of ten are in the East Bay (many of them clustered near Vallejo). Eight of ten of the most expensive are in the South Bay.
