The best ways to ring in Cannabis Christmas across San Francisco.
Whip out the green (medical) card and rolling papers—this Saturday is 4/20. And if 4/20 is cannabis Christmas, then medical marijuana dispensaries are its Macy’s. Though the cause for celebration—from legalization to good vibes—depends on the hobbyist, patient, or Deadhead, there’s an SF party for you to make (or impair) some memories.
For the Pageant Lover: The ever-elegant Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (San Francisco’s order of queer “nuns”) will host the Apothecarium’s day-of party, where everyone will get free lighters, pre-rolled joints, and edible samples from local pot bakeries. “Christmas is Christmas because you have to go shopping right?” says Matthew, an Apothecarium employee. “It’s good to see so many people open about medical cannabis and celebrating the freedoms that we have in this state.”
For the Music Junkie: One dispensary really getting into the holiday spirit is SPARC. They’ll have extended hours, raffles, and free goodies like t-shirts for their first customers. If you’re the kind who enjoys your music—ahem—elevated, there’s live jazz from the Kai Devitt-Lee Trio in the morning and Grown Kids Radio DJs will spin a trippy synth-filled set in the afternoon. Go for some uninhibited dancing, or shoe-gazing (and we mean literally staring at your shoes) in the lounge.
For the Traditionalist: For the most part, the 4:20 p.m. smoking ceremony takes place outside, traditionally at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park. “I’ve been here for about 4 years and it’s been my experience that there’s really no organization to it,” says Anthony of the Green Cross, who will be out representing his business: “We usually show up on Hippie Hill and hand out free grinders and stuff. Last year me and my dad were here and we just were on our Segways and went through [the park] and gave people freebies to show our support.” But what happens at 4:20? Does Jerry Garcia’s ghost appear? “Once 4:20 comes everyone just lights up at the same time.” Safe to say we can expect an afternoon haze.
