Mandatory Weekend

Learning to cook, exploding lights in the sky, interactive art, and more.

 A glimpse into the future

Makers@The Mint
What: A weekend pop-up market full of hand-made, artisan crafts.
Where: The Old Mint! Sprawling the 12 rooms of the first floor, with each room filled with a different sort of product.
When: Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th.
Cost: Free entry, with available items of varying prices.
Why: Because the Old Mint building is gorgeous, and what's a better excuse to mingle around the place but to get a head start on some holiday shopping.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day

Where: Inside every bottle of Belajolais Nouveau and inside your heart.
When: The third Thursday of November, so all day today.
Cost: Varying.
Why: There is hardly a better way to embrace French culture than through a glass of wine.

The Annual Building Lighting Ceremony
What: Come sunset Friday, a countdown will begin to the lighting of One, Two, Three, and Four Embarcadero Center, followed by a display of exploding, colored minerals in the sky (aka fireworks).
Where: One, Two, Three, and Four Embarcadero Center.
When: Friday, November 22nd, from 4 to 7 PM.
Cost: Free! (This included validated parking, as well.)
Why: Exploding lights in the sky and a grandiose plugging-in of hanging lights on city buildings may be the best way to beckon the holiday spirit within us all.

Seasonal Cooking Demos
What: Holiday food focused cooking demonstrations held by the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA).
Where: The Ferry Building, in the CUESA classroom which is under the tents in front of the Ferry Building.
When: Saturday, November 23rd, from 8 AM to 2 PM.
Cost: Free!
Why: Because it's about time you learned how to make something—ANYTHING—for Thanksgiving dinner.

Dissident Futures Arts and Ideas Festival
What: An interactive festival exploring potential futures through art, food, urban planning, music, and more.
Where: Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
When: Saturday, November 23rd, from noon to 9 PM.
Cost: Free, but you need to RSVP.
Why: Because no-one knows what the future holds, but you could if you attend this event.
