Maine-raised, RISD–trained designer Kate Jones may call herself a New England Yankee, but it’s immediately obvious that she’s not the “candy-colored polos and embroidered lobsters” type, as she puts it. The Ursa Major jewelry designer arrived in San Francisco last month, from Cape Cod by way of New York, where she was plucked to become the first-ever women’s design director for Taylor Stitch. Working alongside technical designer Samantha Garcia, she’s creating looks for the ubiquitous Stitch guy’s better half, starting with a line of indigo knits—a racer-back tank, a tee, a long-sleeved boatneck shirt, a sweatshirt, and a T-shirt dress ($45 to $90)—which will land in stores this month. “I love the ease of California dressing,” Jones says, likening the look to “a young Lauren Hutton—a little bit tomboy, casually cool.” But how might that chic tomboy dress for a chilly San Francisco summer? Here, Jones in four layered looks from her favorite local stores.
