San Francisco—a boom and bust town from its inception— has a history of hard-partying moments interspersed by calmer, self-reflective intervals. With IPOs and major galas slated for the coming months, we’re clearly in boom mode again. That will require a greater tolerance for mixed beverages. The Exploratorium’s annual Science of Cocktails fête served as the perfect testing ground for this new exuberance. Throughout the evening, bartenders Doug Williams and Tom Mich treated guests to salted-caramel tequila dust (not to be confused with other types of dust) while Dan Alvarado fired up his cocktail-contest winner, the Amargo brûlée. Weeks later, guests swapped toasts as Tony Bennett sang his heartfelt anthem to the city at UCSF’s benefit concert held at the Fairmont hotel. The dotcom world also had its fair share of bashes, including the annual TechFellow Awards at SFMOMA, hosted by actor Jim Parsons, with Sean Parker in attendance. A week later, Beatrice Pang, Henri Deshays, and Indre Rockefeller, all with ties to Stanford’s business school, held a launch party for shopping site ModeWalk.com at Isha and Asim Abdullah’s Pacific Heights penthouse. And so it all begins (again).
