Tend Your Beer Garden

The top five new bars that are keeping beer booming.

Brotzeit Lokal
Guests can dock their boats in the slip at Brotzeit Lokal, a beer garden and restaurant on the Oakland Estuary where you’ll find nearly as many housemade sausage varieties as German microbrews. An exclusive pour of Linden Street’s malty Alte Schule is on tap. Order it—or a handful of other beers—in a boot-shaped stein and they’ll ring their bar bell. 1000 Embarcadero (at 10th Ave.), Oakland, 510-645-1905

The Beer Hall
The Beer Hall believes that the best beer shopping is done with a cold, frosty one in hand. Its mid-Market store and bar also has bottles for wine lovers, but its online delivery service means that you don’t really need to leave your house. 1 Polk St. (at Market St.), 415-800-7416

Moxy Beer Garden
At Moxy Beer Garden, fresh beer from local breweries like Bison and Line 51 wash down a middlebrow menu of burgers and garlic fries. You can guzzle a location-appropriate pint of Calicraft Buzzerkeley sparkling ale under a heat lamp on the patio. Note: Moxy is kid-and-bicycle-friendly. 3136 Sacramento St. (at 66th St.) Berkeley, 510-547-6699

Speakeasy
Speakeasy’s discreet industrial Bayview taproom offers four ounce beer samples by the tasting flight—a great follow-up to a tour of the brewery. Limited releases like Payback smoked porter, $3 happy hour pints, and growlers to go sweeten the deal. 1195 Evans Ave. (at Keith St.), 415-642-3371

Mikkeller Bar SF
Revered “gypsy” brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergsø has settled down with Chuck Stilphen (Oakland’s the Trappist, Walnut Creek’s ØL) at Mikkeller Bar SF, where exposed-brick walls enclose 42 temperature-controlled taps filled with house beers and Mikkeller classics. For lambic lovers, a sour-beer cellar awaits below ground. 34 Mason St. (near Eddy St.), 415-984-0279
