Top seven non-Easter Easter celebrations

Here in San Francisco, when it comes to a holiday like Easter, we always find ways to celebrate in the utmost unconventional form. Often times, it hard to tell what part of the holiday is even still in there. Here are our seven favorite unorthodox Easter events. Eat your heart out, Easter bunny.

1. LETTUCE TURNIP THE BEET

What: Sound it out. Celebrate the tasteful delights of the spring season with a night of food and music. Experience a wildly ethnic Easter celebration, featuring bites by chef Vivian Nguyen, Dj’d beats, and a Vietnamese Jungle with a bamboo dance floor. (Dress up in your best jungle attire for full effect.)

What’s this got to do with Easter?: Fear not: the event will include the traditional Easter egg hunt.

Where: The Center, 546 Fillmore St., SF

When: April 6, 5:30 p.m.

Info: Click here.

2. BRING YOUR OWN BIG WHEEL

What: You, your big wheel, and a daredevil attitude for Easter’s most reckless event. Race your miniature plastic bikes (you know, the ones designed for the 3-6 year-old demographic) alongside hundreds of (other) adults who believe in ultimate toy sports. Rules? Just one: only plastic big wheels allowed (helmet recommended).

What’s this got to do with Easter?: Watch out for flying bunny ears from big wheel collisions.

Where: 20th and Vermont streets, S.F.

When: April 8, 4 p.m. (Permit approval pending. Visit the website the day of.)

Info: Click here.

3. HOLI

What: Holi, one of India’s biggest celebrations, will be in full swing at the Bay Area’s biggest Indian festival at Asha Stanford. Paint, 5,500 pounds of it, will be provided for battlegoers who will act as both the canvas and the painter on the color battlefield. Bollywoodmusic will be DJ’d and Indian food savored.

What’s this got to do with Easter?: Now we will know how eggs feel on Easter.

Where: San Hill Fields, Sand Hill Road, Stanford.

When: April 7–8, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

Info: Click here.

4. EASTER SUNDAY BUTCHER FEST

What: Chef Rick DeBoard from Café Rouge will demonstrate how to butcher a whole goat at Bloodhound this Sunday. If you can still stomach it-enjoy goat ham sliders and goat sausage chased down with a complimentary cocktail from the bar.

What’s this got to do with Easter?: You can plan on not seeing the Easter bunny here.

Where: Bloodhound, 1145 Folsom St., S.F.

When: April 8, 3 p.m.

Info: Click here.

5. HUNKY JESUS FLESH FEST

What: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will host the annual “hot” Jesus contest this Easter. Expect hundreds of Jesuses to come out in their holy get ups from crowns made of thorns to speedos made of … silk. All vying for the title of “2012 Hunky Jesus”.

What’s this got to do with Easter?: Well, as they say, Jesus had a sense of humor.

Where: Dolores Park

When: April 8, 3–4:30 p.m.

Info: Click here.

6. WINE TASTING AT THE WINERY SF ON TREASURE ISLAND

What: Sip and savor wine at the one and only, recently opened, true winery in San Francisco. The Winery crushes and bottles their wines right on the island. This Sunday cheers pinots and chardonnays to the Easter holiday in a grandioso tasting room or relax in the outdoor picnic area. Enjoy a complimentary chocolate tasting with a purchase of a wine tasting. Bus 108 will take you from downtown to the Island.

What’s this got to do with Easter?: The man himself drank wine.

Where: Treasure Island

When: April 8, 12–5 p.m.

Info: Click here.

7. 15 ROMOLO BUNNY BRUNCH

What: Enjoy dishes from chicken fried rabbit and waffles to colored pickled eggs. Signature bourbon cocktails appropriately mixed and matched by a guest bartender, Daren Crawford from Bourbon and Branch.

What’s this got to do with Easter?: When we think of Easter we think of brunch, and 15 Romolo thinks of burboun and bacon-eared bunny burgers dressed for the holiday.

Where: 15 Romolo, 15 Romolo Pl., S.F.

When: April 6, 11:30–6 p.m.

Info: Click here.
