Urgent Kentucky Derby News: Where To Get In Mint (Julep) Condition

The best places to have a mint julep in hand for Saturday’s big race.

If you just want to drink...

Marengo on Union will be serving classic mint juleps, refreshing peach juleps, and the Kentucky mule: a powerful combination of Jim Beam, ginger beer, and fresh lime juice. 1980 Union St. (at Buchanan), 415-441-2575

The speakeasy-like Burritt Room will be mixing up two specialty cocktails for the derby: the Burritt Alley Julep, featuring Buffalo Trace bourbon and Fernet Branca, and the Peachy Keen Cobbler, a sweet mix of sherry, peach liqueur, and muddled peaches. 417 Stockton St. (near Bush), 415-400-0500

For a twist on the classic mint julep, Alembic on Haight Street is serving up the Devil's Julep. The drink is a fusion of Larceny bourbon with toasted brown rice, mint, and peach brandy. To top it all off, they hand crush their ice. 1725 Haight St. (near Cole St.), 415-666-0822

If you want to get gussied up...

Bet on some horses, participate in the annual hat contest, and sip on mint juleps at Golden Gate Fields this Saturday. 1100 Eastshore Highway, Berkeley, 510-559-7300

Come dressed in your finest derby attire for The Starlight Room’s 2nd annual hat and best-dressed couple contest. Brunch, mint juleps, and mimosas will be served from 12:30 to 4:00. If you decide to keep the party going, the Sir Francis Drake Hotel will be offering discounted rates. 450 Powell St. (at Sutter), 415-395-8595

Sport your most dapper seersucker and festive hat at Steins Beer Garden & Restaurant in Mountain View this Saturday. $5 mint juleps will be rolling out of the bar from 1 to 4. Derby attire encouraged. 895 Villa Street, Mountain View, 650-963-9568
