Weekender: Holiday Shopping in Wine Country

The holidays are upon us and for most people, last-minute shopping will mean joining the hordes at Union Square. So break out of the mold and escape to wine country for a weekend of antiquing.

Shop

Last-minute Christmas shopping is tough. Luckily, downtown St. Helena is full of one-of-a-kind consignment and home decor shops to check off every person on your list. Napa Valley Vintage Home is a treasure trove of artisanal ceramic tableware, lush linens, and, at this time of year, holiday decorations—the store has a huge collection of handcrafted wooden ornaments. Acres Home and Garden, just down the street, is also good for decorations and small gifts, and has a great card collection, both for the holidays and otherwise.

Eat

The Restaurant at Meadowood is the obvious go-to if you’re going big, but with Christmas Eve right on your heels, you may be looking for something a little less ambitious. Goose and Gander serves up anything from a juicy burger with duck fat fries to guinea hen and gander fettucine. Make sure to snag a cocktail dreamed up by Napa’s go-to mixologist Scott Beattie.

Stay

Just a five-minute drive from downtown and tucked away in the hillside, the Meadowood is the perfect cozy retreat. Most rooms have a fireplace, which staff will happy set up and start for you—the perfect way to relax after a heavy day of shopping. Of course, no luxury hotel would be complete without a spa treament. Enjoy a therapeutic deep-tissue massage, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, a vinotherapy treatment with grapes and grape seeds. No matter what you do, the staff is more than happy to accommodate.
