What To Do at This Weekend's J-Pop Festival

Tomorrow and Sunday is the sixth annual J-Pop Summit Festival, a massive street fair celebrating Japanese culture held in the Fillmore District and at Union Square. It's got music, film, food, and even what the organizers call "niche subcultures." (Like this one.) That all can be quite a bit for the uninitiated to take in, so we've assembled a handy cheat sheet for this weekend's festivities. And if you see any giant robots for sale, bring us back one.

Event: May'n in concert.
What: The rock singer famous for several anime theme songs performs live.
Where:
Slim's (333 11th Street)
When:
Sunday. Doors open at 7 pm. Show at 8 pm.

Event: Film Festival
What:
Nineteen animated and live action Japanese movies, including A Tale of Samurai Cooking : A True Love Story, Count Five To Dream Of You, and Kanzaburo.
Where:
New People Cinema (1746 Post St.)
When:
Showtimes on Saturday and Sunday.

Event: J-Pop Idol
What: Karaoke contest featuring Japanese pop songs
Where: Japantown's Pagoda Stage.
When: Sunday, 11 am.
Cost: Free.

 

Event: Street Fashion Contest
What:
A "Toyland Parade"-themed dress up contest.
Where:
Japantown's Pagoda Stage.
When:
Sunday, 1:30 pm.
Cost:
Free.



Event: Pocky eating contest
What:
It's a Pocky eating contest. What else do we have to tell you?
Where:
Japantown's Pagoda Stage.
When:
Sunday, 3:15 pm.
Cost: 
Free.

 

Event: J-Pop at Union Square
What:
Traditional and contemporary art performances, as well as sponsor booths.
Where:
Union Square.
When:
Saturday, 12 pm to 8:50 pm.
Cost: 
Free.
