What We're Obsessed With Right Now

The food, films, blogs, and more that San Francisco staffers are geeking out about this week.

Gingerbread Speculoos and Dark Chocolate Cake from Joy the Baker.

Ellen Cushing, Senior Editor: This will probably come as a surprise to exactly no one, but I am OBSESSED with the new Beyoncé album. I literally cried listening to XO in Safeway yesterday, and last night I had an anxiety dream that involved me working at Pitchfork and having to frantically rejigger my best albums of the year list at the last minute in order to include hers. (Beyoncé is the queen of everything, including my subconscious.) If you haven't listened to the album (and watched the amazing, bananas videos that accompany it) yet, you should prrrrrobbaly fake sick, leave work, and do so immediately.

Sara Deseran, Editor-at-Large: Haters can hate, but personally, I'm thrilled that La Boulange has taken over the food at Starbucks. I'm currently on lunch three of their kale salad with brown rice, roasted beets, butternut squash, broccoli and a lemon-tahini dressing. Whatever kind of karma hit I might be taking from supporting a chain is surely being counterbalanced with this healthy, and quite tasty, choice.

Ted Gioia, Editorial Intern: I recently discovered witty and wonderful mega-blogger Joy the Baker through this amazing recipe for Gingerbread Speculoos and Dark Chocolate Cake. Midway through reading the piece, I realized I have a new favorite person in the world.

Katherine Guzman, Editorial Intern: At the risk of sounding creepy, I'm actually obsessed with Sian Nagan, a sommelier at Quince. She has this incredible ability to talk about wine as if she's singing a lullaby. Her voice hushed but her tone strong, her words concisely chosen to coax you into confidence. "The 07s were showing beautifully", she cooed at us (in reference to the Burgundies we were looking at). I love talking about wine but listening to someone talk about wine had never been this enchanting—I'll buy everything she recommends!

Scott Lucas, Web Editor: I'm still laughing about this twitter parody of a certain local magazine that I may or may not work for. You haven't really made it in life until someone nails you this well in a spoof. My favorite fake story? "The 8 Washington Referendum: This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things." Which, I think, is a headline I actually may have pitched once.

Sean Pyles, Editorial Intern: This week I have been marveling at the courtesy of the fine people of San Francisco. My admiration is focused specifically on the kindness directed towards me as a biker and daily commuter on BART. As we have seen, San Francisco has room for improvement in regards to how bikers are treated as occupants of the road. Indeed, a solid 45% of my time on the road is spent making sure cars don't collide with me or people don't open their doors on my zooming body. This is what makes BART such a delightful haven. More often than not people will step aside from the bike bar and let me rest my wheels. While this may seem like a basic, common courtesy, it makes my commute loads easier. For that, I thank you.

Jon Steinberg, Editor-in-Chief: I'm still wrapping my mind around the investigative tour de force that was the "Invisible Child" project from the New York Times. A 28,000-word, 5-part series about a homeless 11-year-old in New York City that took 15 months to assemble, it should be required reading for everyone who lives in a city, witnesses extreme poverty, and wonders "Why?"

Annie Tittiger, Managing Editor: The boutique Park and Pond on Grant has saved me a lot of grey hairs in terms of holiday gift-shopping. It's got great little gifts that are perfect for the holidays: hand-printed dish towels, fun, zany prints of S.F. streets, and beautiful jewelry out the wazoo. I walked out with gifts for my mom, my cousin, and my boyfriend in one trip—power shopping like never before!
