What We're Obsessed With Right Now

The breakfast cereal, fan art, and time lapse videos that San Francisco staffers are geeking out about right now.

Ellen Cushing, Senior Editor: The fan art of Vin Diesel recently came to my attention, and basically I plan on never looking at another website for the rest of my days on this earth. Cut through the disturbing fanfic and make your way to the image gallery and I promise you will not regret it.

Ian Eck, Editorial Intern: Between the busy activity on the bay and the animism of the fog, San Francisco lends itself to time lapse videos particularly well. This one, produced by time lapse innovator Marc Donahue of Permagrin Films, is another confirmation of this. He gives us a dizzying display of the city, quick and pulsating, but the Tony Bennett cover in the background gives an eerie contrast. A bit overwhelming but gorgeous all the same

Ted Gioia, Editorial Intern: Kurt Vonnegut wrote a made-for-TV movie! This is not a joke. "Between Time and Timbuktu or Prometheus-5: A Space Fantasy" is a sort of Frankenstein creation of unrelated Vonnegut works stitched together into a horrifying (and amazing) whole. Vonnegut only had one comment about his opinion of the movie: “I am not going to have anything more to do with film—for this reason: I don’t like film.”

Katherine Guzman, Editorial Intern: I've been kind of ridiculously into Cascadian Farm's Organic Cinnamon Crunch cereal. Like, I mean, maybe in a borderline unhealthy way. It tastes EXACTLY like Cinnamon Toast Crunch except it's made in a more wholesome, less-chemical-filled way, so it's like slightly more justifiable.

Scott Lucas, Web Editor: Can I still use the Google Bus Song? No, it's too late to that one now. Well, this week I'm obsessed with the play Jerusalem at SF Playhouse. It's more than three hours long, it's written in an almost incomprehensible British dialect, it's heavy with gentrification, druidism, and irresponsible drug use, and I think it's the best play I've seen this season anywhere.

Sean Pyles, Editorial Intern: Though this may be a little obvious to life-long Bay Areans, it has recently come to my attention that downtown Berkeley is gorgeous and vibrant. I saw a show atFreight & Salvage Coffee House last night and am still thinking of how delightful it was to walk around the streets in the area. So charming. If you haven't gotten out of the city in a while, take BART to downtown Berkeley and grab a cup of coffee—it'll be worth your time if for nothing else to feel a bit more intellectual than usual.

Annie Tittiger, Managing Editor: If you're ever up in the town of Murphys—and you happen to be obsessed with cooking—you have to check out the Spice Tin. It's this little store off of Main Street where there's an entire wall dedicated to exotic spices ("From Abodo to Za'atar, as the saleswomen said). Not only that, but they've got all these amazing flavored salts, including Merlot-flavored (it's purple!), as well as flavored sugars (lavender-tinged sugar in my shortbread recipe? Yes, please!). Needless to say, I had a field day. I had yet to find a smoked paprika that red and pungent! And if Murphys is too big a detour for you, at least check out their monthly newsletter where the owners give out jaw-dropping recipes to get your spice on.
