Veggie Grill goes beyond the burger. 

 

Where’s the beef? Not here.

But you may not miss it when you bite into the juicy Beyond Burger ($12.95), now offered at all Veggie Grill locations. With a plant-based menu, it recently became the first fast-casual restaurant to serve—what else—the much ballyhooed plant-based burger from Beyond Meat, the El Segundo company out to create alternative protein choices.

Made of pea protein, yeast extract, natural oils such as coconut, and beet and annatto extracts for coloring, the Beyond Burger has the fatty mouthfeel, toothsomeness and strandlike appearance of your favorite beef one. It may lack the latter’s robust, irony depth, but it is far more flavorful than your average vegetarian or even turkey burger. It also boasts no cholesterol. At Veggie Grill, the patty, which comes with fries, is piled atop a sesame seed bun with tomato, lettuce, melty vegan cheese and even housemade secret sauce.

At the Santana Row locale in San Jose, customers have been driving from as far away as Fresno and Sacramento to taste for themselves, the manager says. It’s even lured in the curious from the bona fide burger joint right next door.
