There was a palpable energy out in the crowd on the night of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s annual black-tie gala.

Atlanta Symphony Hall

Guests were waiting for funnyman-turned-musician Steve Martin and his band, the Steep Canyon Rangers. Photographer Jeff Roffman happened to catch Martin in a quiet moment just before showtime and snapped this picture. “He was actually tuning his banjo backstage,” Roffman recalls. “We made quick eye contact, and he nodded a ‘no problem.’” Martin took the stage moments later and, in between songs, had the crowd roaring with laughter for the rest of the night. “Backstage at Symphony Hall is always dark right before a performance, except for that one spot,” Roffman continues. “Another foot forward, and he would have been in the dark. It was a right-place, right-time moment.”
