Atlanta Ballet finishes its 84th season with pure MAYhem.

Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre

The current state of ballet is changing by leaps and bounds. Touted by the Atlanta Ballet as a contemporary “no-holds-barred explosion of creativity,” the incredible dance company closed its 84th season with a modern performance of its latest three-work show, MAYhem, at the beautiful OTP performing arts arena. Resident choreographer Helen Pickett and Artistic Director John McFall each put up world-premiere pieces and were joined by Boston Ballet’s resident choreographer Jorma Elo for a return of his piece, 1st Flash. It was during a dress rehearsal for Pickett’s The Exile that photographer Kim Kenney snapped this impressive action shot while standing in the auditorium. “This was a high-energy, emotionally charged ballet,” recalls the lensman, who has captured several dances on film for the company. “Ballet is a difficult subject to photograph,” admits Kenney. “So I am particularly pleased when I capture the moment of, say, a grand jeté [like this].” Us too.
