"Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life" by William Finnegan has become the modern-day surfer’s Bible. I’ve seen it tucked under arms in Venice Beach, Calif., and stashed in board bags in Costa Rica. Anywhere there are surfers, there is also this book. It gave a literary voice to a sport known for “gnarly tubes” and other unbearable cliches. It explored the solitude, the complexity and primal exuberance that one feels catching a wave. And as a surfer and writer myself, it’s hard to think anyone will ever do it better than Finnegan. He did, after all, win the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 2016 for it. Finnegan will be in Aspen this March as part of Aspen Words’ Winter Words series to share his story—live. March 20, 6pm, tickets $25, Paepcke Auditorium, 1000 N. Third St., aspenshowtix.com
