Chicago may now have a booming fitness scene, but things were quite a bit different when co-founders Bonnie Micheli and Tracy Roemer opened the first Shred415 location in April 2011. “We were busy moms who wanted an efficient and effective workout, but couldn’t find it in Chicago,” say Roemer of their decision to create the intense 60-minute class, which incorporates both cardio and strength training. Flash-forward seven years, and Shred415 is one of the city’s most popular exercise studios—and its message is getting more widespread.
Last July, the pair announced a franchising plan; they have already reached 37 locations, with new outposts in Milwaukee and Memphis expected later this year. And for the third summer in a row, Shred415 will partner with the Park Hyatt for a weekly Shred at the Park workout. The 45-minute outdoor class, held on the NoMi terrace, is treadmill-free but still delivers the same heart-pumping, sweat-inducing workout devoted Shredders crave, Micheli says.
There’s also a second annual Shred415 retreat happening this month, offering clients a way to connect (and work out, of course) outside the studio. “We wanted to create something fun, intimate and experiential,” says Roemer of the retreat, to be held at Arizona’s famed Miraval Resort and Spa. “It offers our clients a few days away from the stress and demands of everyday life, and an opportunity for them to talk about fitness, take Shred415 classes and strengthen friendships.”
“Strengthen” seems just the right word. Shred at the Park, 800 N. Michigan Ave., single classes $28, 10-class pack $240; Shred415 Retreat, May 9-12, from $2,353 per person
