A spectacular house in Memorial features furnishings created by Nina Magon specifically for the space and the very cool homeowners.

"FIRST, I HAND-DRAW the designs,” says hot Houston interior designer Nina Magon as she explains her method, similar to that of a haute couture fashion designer, for creating one-of-a-kind furniture for her clients that reflect their personal tastes and lifestyles. Magon’s sketches then go to local artisans who build her custom pieces. This was a central part of the process involved when she, along with her team at Contour Interior Design, recently orchestrated a soft, contemporary masterpiece for a hip British couple who moved here from London with their young son. Magon based her decor decisions on the family’s love for entertaining, as well as the sophistication of the home’s interior architecture.

Located in Piney Point, the house is a stunning 7,000-square-foot, two-story midcentury modern. The open-concept first floor is wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows that soar to 20 feet in the living area and overlook a lush backyard with a swimming pool. With this airy and dramatic setting as her canvas, Magon got out her sketch pad and went to work. “The idea was to use a mix of clean-lined furnishings, high-end finishes and the couple’s abstract art collection,” she says.

In the expansive living room, the designer pulled from the colors of the mosaic rocks in the fireplace that magnificently rises up two-stories. For the hardwood floors, she picked thread colors of brown, green and black to create a custom-made rug. She added two rounded Moooi sofas in dark gray along with two ocean green chairs that she designed with the same curved look of the sofas. In front of the fireplace is a custom bench covered in iridescent blue Brentano fabric from Donghia.

Magon’s idea of combining modern with glam carries over to the dining room, anchored by a sleek Italian-made dining table from Malerba that seats 10 and features a lacquered wood top and chrome base. For casual meals, there’s a nearby nook with a cozy built-in banquette covered in dark blue fabric and a wood-topped table supported by four columns of quartz that resemble white marble with veins of gray.

“Creating custom pieces for my clients allows for each design to be unique,” observes Magon. “These particular homeowners went with a less-is-more philosophy, and I created unique pieces and added others to realize their vision.” The result is a chic and personalized family-and-friends sanctuary that radiates individuality.
