The Outside World

Backyard Bliss
For a project in Vickery, designer Janie Hirsch of
J. Hirsch Interior Design worked with homebuilder Hedgewood Homes to create a courtyard for entertaining despite its proximity to neighboring back alley driveways. A teak dining set from Kingsley Bate, stone accessories from Campo de’ Fiori, custom pillows and antique candelabra and lanterns make this outdoor oasis a “beautiful space to entertain by the fire, whether lounging with a drink or having dinner,” says Hirsch, who dialed up the drama by lighting the fountain and walkways. She recommends adding a fire and, “of course, candlelight.”

ASK THE EXPERT

What’s the best way to care for your outdoor living
upholstered pieces?

“A premium outdoor fabric is inherently low maintenance; however, dirt can cause the issues, so I prefer to bring loose cushions inside or use a cover on my outdoor upholstery. They can also be gently pressure washed to restore much of the original beauty. The trend is to use the same fabrics indoors that you use outdoors. Now available in velvet, linens and chenille, the newest high-performance textiles are intelligent, soft and beautiful. Busy casual lifestyles are the life we live, so children, pets and even the
occasional glass of wine are no longer a worry.” –Bobbi Sheron, Lewis & Sheron Textiles

European Excellence
Dreaming of a European escape but stuck in the South? Bring a little jaunty Continental hat tip to your backyard with Kettal’s new Mesh collection, designed exclusively for them by Patricia Urquiola. It’s the same style used at the Urquiola-designed Lake Como, Italy’s il Sereno Lago di Como property. There’s a daybed option as well as two chaise options, both decked out as shown with Terrain outdoor fabrics by Doshi Levien. Kettal, started in 1966, is as relevant today as ever, with these beauties just as at home in a midcentury modern backyard as they are at a Spanish castillo. Paul +, ADAC, Ste. 121

What trends are you seeing in outdoor living spaces?

"Our clients go on vacation and wanting to bring that [resort] environment home... The level of design expectation has increased, such as smokers, pizza ovens, automation, lighting features. The trendiest things we are seeing are outdoor movie theaters that rise up from being buried—Porsche makes this—constellation fiber-optic star floors, underwater speakers and pool lighting that can do shows with music. It is really a fun time to be building luxury outdoor environments.” –Chris Fogleman, Thrasher Pool & Spa

Sweet Serenity
For this gorgeous backyard in Serenbe, design duo (and Serenbe residents) Patrick and Meghan Sharp knew they wanted it to be an extension of the homeowners’ living room. “The couple entertains quite frequently, so having additional gathering space was important.” Drama comes from the stark contrast of the white Ludovica + Roberto Palomba for Driade chairs against greenery from Serenbe’s own Forage & Flower. “The homeowners are extremely busy and needed the space to be low-maintenance,” continues Meghan. “Since it was only partially protected from the elements, we chose furniture that has longevity and can withstand weather changes.” Custom benches with outdoor fabric from Schumacher and fire pit chairs from Vondom round out the design.

Material World
Although inspired by old Hollywood, Evitavonni is anything but black and white. The London-based fabric house has released Outdoor|Indoor, a new collection that harkens to the sophisticated, genteel aesthetic of three classic films: Roman Holiday, starring Audrey Hepburn; Summertime with Katherine Hepburn; and High Society with Grace Kelly. Simple, beautiful and made by expert weavers from around the world, the textiles are designed to withstand the elements, including light fade, stains, water and mold. To the trade

Bright Eyes
For his sculptural lighting collaboration with DEDON, award-winning designer Stephen Burks brings a whimsical element to the outdoors, combining handwoven bodies with Italian-milled marble bases and optional acrylic eyes to create an eccentric collection dubbed The Others. Alone, each personality-packed lamp makes a strong visual statement. But when stacked in totemlike formations, playful characters emerge. “I imagined a colorful community of dreamers, full of personality, gazing back at the rest of the world with ambition, sophistication and pride,” says Burks. “They appeared to me almost like ambassadors or guides into our imagination.” From $900, Kolo Collection, Westside Provisions District

A New Day
“The Daybreak collection was developed around the idea of combining casual comfort with bold design,” says Marc Kurlander, Link Outdoor’s director of design. For the rectangular Daybreak dining table, which spans 120 inches and seats up to 10, Kurlander mixed teak and stainless steel to create a versatile piece that would be at home indoors or out. The table also comes in a variety of finish options. To the trade, Ainsworth-Noah, ADAC, Ste. 518
