Brad Paisley's tourmate, Leah Turner, is blowing up the country music scene.
Singer/songwriter Leah Turner may be a California girl by birth, but her father’s job as a championship header in the rodeo influenced the 26-year-old to go country. While attending college at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Turner performed her class final in front of legend Kenny Loggins, who told her she needed to get to L.A., stat. There, she connected with producer Humberto Gatica (a powerhouse who has won Grammys for his work with Celine Dion and Michael Jackson) before making the move to Nashville, where Columbia Nashville signed her this past summer. Fresh off the high of breaking the top 40 on country airwaves with her debut single “Take the Keys,” Turner is prepping for the release of her debut EP on May 6 and hitting the road with touring vet Brad Paisley. We caught up with Turner after she stopped by JEZ offices for an exclusive performance. Here, she talks comparisons to P!nk and visiting A-Town. @leahturnermusic
Who do you look up to, musically?
The soundtrack to my childhood [was always] Garth Brooks and Shania Twain. I love that she’s sassy but sweet.
We’ve heard you’ve often been compared to P!nk.
They say I’m the P!nk of country. She’s feisty but can rip your heart out with a ballad. I think I get that comparison because of my vocal tone, and she’s kind of a badass!
You get to steal a hit song. Which one is it?
I wish I had written “Mama’s Broken Heart” [by Miranda Lambert]. Who hasn’t felt that way? Sometimes you just go crazy when a breakup happens.
How’s ATL treating you?
We ate at Chops Lobster Bar last night, and it was really good. We got the surf and turf, so I picked the filet mignon and lobster and it came out fried. It was the most unbelievable thing I’ve ever tasted!
