Stepping off the ferry from Manhattan to Governors Island was like a trip through time as thousands of people dressed in Roaring ‘20s attire made their way to the Eighth Annual Jazz Age Lawn Party.
Jazz Age Lawn Party, Governors Island
Held twice this summer, in June and August, the celebration was a fantastical world of dames dressed in extravagant headpieces and dropped-waist slip dresses, while dandies sported bowler hats, smart suits and oxford shoes. Michael Arenella, the festival’s organizer and conductor of the Dreamland Orchestra, transcribes music from authentic period recordings by hand for his group to perform. The result was a dance floor filled with dolls ready to try out the Charleston, with performances by the Dreamland Follies (pictured) and others. When the orchestra needed a break, gramophone DJs took over while families and friends spread out on blankets in the sun sipping signature cocktails from the event’s host, St. Germain—nostalgic for the Golden Era they never knew.
