Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
WHAT Wave those rainbow flags! This weekend the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival celebrates 15 years of queer cinema with a 10-day event that includes showings of more than 60 films. Joining the celebration this year is Academy Award nominee James Franco, who will accept the festival’s HBO Latin America Ally Award for his career accomplishments before the screening of his latest film, the controversial Interior.Leather Bar on April 27 at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. Another must-attend is the opening night film and gala (also at the Gusman) on April 26, which features a showing of G.B.F., director Darren Stein’s comedy about a trio of popular girls fighting to befriend their high school’s first openly gay student. Locust Project’s Spring Fling
WHAT For the last 15 years, Locust Projects has been exposing the city to forward-thinking art by creatives from all around the world. That mission still holds strong. Join gallery Director Chana Sheldon as she celebrates the institution’s landmark anniversary with a soiree atop the 1111 Building on Lincoln Road. On the agenda? Food, drinks, dancing, insightful conversation and the largest silent auction the gallery has held to date. Cost is $150 per person and $125 for Locust Project members. Miami Beach Polo World Cup
WHAT Now in its eighth year, this showcase of “The Sport of Kings” features dynamic matches on the sands of South Beach featuring teams made of up of both polo newbies and greats. The weekend also boasts nightly VIP events, a fashion show by sponsor La Martina and perhaps a chance encounter with Argentine player and Polo Ralph Lauren model Nacho Figueras, a man who is the incarnation of the blue-blood sport. Paul Van Dyk at Mansion
WHAT We all know DJs are royalty these days, and one of this set’s hardest-working kings in Paul Van Dyk. The Grammy nominee is sure pack the house at Mansion where he will show the sweaty masses the art of the spin. Cost is $35 per person for general admission. Heart of a Chef
WHAT Culinary extravagance is even better when it’s done for a good cause. The Heart of a Chef festival offers attendees a top-notch tasting experience while also raising awareness about childhood obesity and its health risks. Ironically, calories won’t be in short supply with kitchen kings like Todd Erickson of HaVen and Aaron Brooks of Edge Steak & Bar dishing out their best bites. Cost is $30 per person.
