Cool Down

Pool houses and cabanas are the perfect place to get out of the sizzling sun and have a cold drink. This timeless Palm Beach cabana is the perfect spot to beat the heat during the dog days of summer and into fall.

On a lazy summer day after a swim, there’s nothing better than lounging in the pool house, reading a book, scrolling through Instagram or just taking a nap. This extraordinary pool house, designed by local interior designer Mary Lee Harper of Harper & Associates, sets the tone for a relaxing afternoon. Two Robert Leighton rain-forest green single-arm love seats are paired with vibrant fuchsia and bright tangerine geometric pillows inspired by the large painting of parrots by well-known artist Hunt Slonem. Vintage Moroccan side tables and a pair of vintage Balinese chairs restored in antiqued red lacquer set the stage for a competitive game of backgammon. Owners Mark Bennett and Jimmy Tigani are passionate about playing during the hot summer Palm Beach days. Harper, who also designed the main house, has a keen eye for detail in finding vintage furniture, restoring and giving them a new life in full Palm Beach style. “My clients live an incredibly unique life and travel all over, and I wanted the design of the home to reflect who they are.” Harper added iridescent scrim curtains to the cabana to filter out the afternoon sun, which allow her clients and their guests to enjoy refreshing breezes rolling off the nearby intercoastal. Ornate metal palm trees, which were downsized from the homeowners previous home, stand ceremoniously in the corners of the room, lending a chic, tropical vibe. Unlike most cabanas, this Moroccan-style timelessly designed room connects to the main house but has its own turquoise abalone pearlescent mosaic-tiled bathroom filled with luxurious Turkish cotton towels and a full range of SPF sunscreen for those wanting to sun worship. A wet bar stocked with cold drinks and snacks make this a perfect place for an intimate pool cocktail gathering. Bathing suits optional, of course.
